As decision-makers converge in Egypt for the annual climate talks at COP, major new reports warn that we’re at risk of triggering irreversible tipping points in our Earth’s system without rapid and concerted action right now.
This year has been a litany of climate disasters ravaging communities, while oil and gas companies are reaping tens of billions of dollars in profits and continuing to pursue reckless expansion.
Each and every new coal, oil, or gas project needs an insurance CEO to say: “We should underwrite this risk”. But individually and collectively, insurance CEOs have the power to say: “This is too risky. We will act in line with climate science.”
The Insure Our Future campaign examines the top insurers in the energy sector worldwide, and how their CEOs measure up on climate as a result of their companies’ policies on fossil fuels.
Oliver Bäte (@Allianz) is setting the pace for the industry with the strongest policy to cut oil & gas.@ThomasBuberl is clearly committed but @AXA has fallen short.
Who’ll win the race to the top?
Finish line: stop insuring all fossil fuel expansion & phase out in line with 1.5C pic.twitter.com/nZOaMaEEsT— Insure Our Future Global (@InsOurFuture) October 19, 2022
No CEOs have failed their climate test so poorly as #WarrenBuffett (#BerkshireHathaway), Hank Greenberg (@StarrCompanies) & David Long (@LibertyMutual).
They score 0 (or close) out of 10 on the scorecard as the insurers of last resort for #coal.
Will their successors do better? pic.twitter.com/vr8gpZCbzJ— Insure Our Future Global (@InsOurFuture) October 19, 2022
At the helm of the world’s largest energy insurer, John Neal (@LloydsofLondon) might as well change his name to Mr. “Nil” to reflect the barely above zero score garnered by his company’s smoke & mirrors climate policies.
A growing movement will hold him & Lloyd’s to account! pic.twitter.com/pZ9N8vW0fT— Insure Our Future Global (@InsOurFuture) October 19, 2022
Evan Greenberg loves to paper over @Chubb‘s abysmal climate record with lofty words & even rebuffed 72% of Chubb shareholder votes supporting a #NetZero plan with petty excuses.
Mr. Greenberg: Greenwash won’t clean up your score of 0.5 out of 10. Actions speak louder than words! pic.twitter.com/IXMYb67HhG— Insure Our Future Global (@InsOurFuture) October 19, 2022
Fossil fuel projects that don’t get insured, don’t get built.
Take note: every new coal, oil & gas project that ignores the world’s scientists but builds anyway, will have an insurance CEO behind it saying: “this risk is okay”, while condemning us to the risk of climate breakdown pic.twitter.com/CoTNS4hmRF— Insure Our Future Global (@InsOurFuture) October 19, 2022
